No Thomas Edison didn’t go to the University of Johannesburg but if he did I’m sure he’d be proud of this ad promoting the South African University, a school with lofty ideals that offers “academic programmes that advances freedom, democracy, equality and human dignity”.

University of Johannesburg Ad
This piece is part of the campaign labeled “Rethink education. Reinvent yourself.” and makes a great use of typography, color & perspective. The art and copy work to encourage prospective students through optimistic & encouraging messages. Heck, maybe I’ll be making a trip to “Joha” to Rethink/Reinvent … maybe I’ll just Rethink/Reinvent from the desert. Either way, this is a great piece that I’m sure looks awesome as a print.

Whenever I’m approached for a new project one of the first steps I take is research. For example if I’m asked to build a website for a pet store I’ll explore other sites to see what other designers take on a pet store website might have been. I don’t do this to steal ideas but rather to see what info other pet shop owner felt was pertinent to their sites visitors. This is very important step being as how I am a designer and sometimes have little or no experience in the industry I may be building a website to be geared towards. It allows me to suggest things to the client that are sometimes very useful.
I use the pet shop analogy because I was recently asked to help with a calendar design and so I of course began researching other calendar designs. Rather than seeking info I was searching for out-of-the-box approaches to an ancient tool. At first I was a bit disheartened but after a little keyword magic I stumbled across a great post on Smash Magazine. It showcases some fascinating takes on calendars. So, I thought I’d share my favorite.
